The older method of testing was based on idealistic conditions (assuming the wearer knew how to correctly use the device). Older models of hearing protection (such as the PM1010, PM2010, PM3010, PM4011, CM6010) are listed with their original NRR rating, while newer models (PM8000 series and PM9000 series) are listed with the newer NRR standard. In short, models rated under the new NRR standard may offer better protection than those with the same or higher value rated under the old standard.
